The Governor's House was built in 1868 for Charles A. Culberson, 20th Governor of Texas who served from 1895-1899.
The Jefferson lawyer also served as State Attorney General from 1890-94 and was appointed U.S. Senator in a899, serving until 1923.  He was the first Senator elected to office in 1916 - the post was earlier filled by appointment from the Legislature.
